Games People Play: The Repeat

Games People Play, a Palanca-winning play by Glenn Sevilla Mas features theater actors Abner Delina, Thea Yrastorza and Kalil Almonte. Ed Lacson Jr., who also does the production design, directs it while Teresa Barrozo does the sound and music design.

Games People Play is about three characters who try to understand why they are the way they are by revisiting their childhood, specifically the games that they played with each other. Each game is a rite of passage and it represents a significant moment in their coming of age. The writing of the play was inspired by this quote from child psychologist and writer Bruno Bettelheim: “The monster a child knows best and is most concerned with [is] the monster he feels or fears himself to be.”

The production will run from April 22 to 26, 2014, 7:30 PM with a 2:30 PM show on April 26, at the Fine Arts Blackbox Theater, Fine Arts Annex, Ateneo de Manila University.

The 47th Season of PETA Kicks Off

After the box office success of Philippine Educational Theater Association’s (PETA) Rak of Aegis, PETA opens its new theater season with the return of the hit rock-comedy musical to the stage.

Rak of Aegis features the chart-topping Aegis hits such as “Halik,” “Sinta,” “Luha” and “Basang Basa sa Ulan,” rearranged by musical director Myke Salomon. Rak of Aegis is a musical filled with visual spectacle showcasing the Pinoy’s natural love for music and innate resilience in the face of calamity. The musical runs for 67 shows from June 20- August 31, 2014.

PETA also offers a new take on Florante at Laura with Florante at Laura Remastered, a Balagtasan battle inspired performance that infuses the classic text with gritty hip-hop humor and rippin’ rhymes. The story follows two aspiring wordsmiths, Victor, a private school boy and Ronbert, a street vendor, as they navigate through Francisco Baltazar’s masterpiece, in search of their own voice. These young kids yield their words as weapons and learn much more than what textbooks and classrooms could offer. Florante at Laura Remastered is written by Anj Heruela and directed by Ian Segarra. It will be staged on August 8-September 20, 2014 at Springs Production Studios.

OPPO Arrives in the Philippines with the Find 7

OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp., Ltd., a globally registered technology brand, officially enters the Philippine market today with the launch of OPPO Find 7. The Find 7 is currently the flagship phone of the Find series, with the Philippines as the second country to launch this latest innovation, only after China.

“We are extremely excited to launch the OPPO brand and our leading mobile technologies to the Philippine market. OPPO prides itself in delivering world-class innovations that cater to consumers with different requirements when it comes to their mobile needs. We utilize top of the line technologies to bring different smartphone revolutions that raise the bar in mobile devices. Thus, we are happy to introduce our latest innovation, the Find 7, to the Philippines,” said CEO Mr. James Ma of Philippines OPPO Mobile Technology, Inc.

Setting the standard for what is to come, the Find 7 is a smartphone that is designed to push the limits of modern mobile technology.

Extreme Beauty, Clarity Redefined
The OPPO Find 7 is meticulously designed and crafted to ensure that each and every detail was attentively implemented with the user in mind.

The body frame presents a pure and natural ink-like display that perfectly blends with the shiny black panel of the Find 7. It is made of the latest aerospace qualified Titanium Aluminum alloy for increased strength, better screen protection, excellent heat dispersion and a more solid grip for users. The two sides of the smart phone are also designed to make it naturally smooth with light flowing freely, striking the prefect balance between art and comfort.

OPPO’s latest mobile phone adopts the TOL (Touch On Lens) one glass integrative binding technology where each small piece of glass is individually polished and bound in a solution. This technology contributes to fewer cracks and strengthens the Find 7’s body by 40 percent!

With Find 7, OPPO introduces consumers to a new generation of high-definition mobile phones. “It’s Quad HD resolution will bring life’s most precious moments in captivating vivid detail,” according to Mr. Zhao Han, Find 7 Product Manager. The Find 7 boasts a large 5.5 inch screen, 2560X1440 resolution and 538ppi to bring videos and photos to life. In addition, OPPO takes advantage of Fine Pixel coating and Nature Color calibrating technologies to shrink an IMAX screen of more than 350 m2 into the palm of one’s hand.

Created to Capture
The Find 7 creates limitless photographic possibilities with the 13 megapixel camera that includes a 50 megapixel software enhancement feature with the PI 2.0 technology that allows the Find 7 to pick out the best parts of 10 consecutive photos and combine them to make a crisp 50 MP ultra-HD image. The video is also at an incredible 4K resolution with HDR and slow motion capabilities.

Furthermore, the Find 7 is embedded with the world’s first Sony IMX214 stacked CMOS sensor, an upgraded type 1/3.06 imaging module and a wide f/2.0 aperture that allows more light in when taking photos. “The Sony IMX214 stacked CMOS sensor enables you to take great photos even in low light conditions,” explains Mr. Han. With a 32 second long exposure and a smart noise-reduction algorithm, Find 7 users will be able to take crystal clear night shots without using flash or losing image details.

The World’s First Rapid Charging Experience
OPPO’s Find 7 is the first mobile phone that features the new and exclusive VOOC rapid charge technology which significantly increases charging speed by up to 400 percent! It includes a 3000mAh battery, customized circuits, battery cells, 7-pin USB port, data cable and a smart adapter. “This boosts Find 7’s battery life to 75% within 30 minutes, which is 4 times faster than conventional chargers. This technological innovation will allow Find 7 users to enjoy a 2 hour phone call after charging for only 5 minutes,” added Mr. Han.

Apart from the rapid charging speed, Find 7 employs an innovatively optimized circuit topological structure to reduce temperature, and builds a comprehensive 5-layer protection mechanism from the adapter to the interface and to the phone. Each section is heavily secured, making Find 7 the safest and fastest charging phone.

“OPPO is very excited to enter a very mature and adaptive smartphone market like the Philippines. With Find 7, OPPO is offering Filipinos an amazing mobile experience with our finest and most innovative smartphone to date,” added Mr. Ma.

Pricing and Availability
A standard version of Find 7, the Find 7a will be available in authorized retailers and resellers nationwide starting this April. Color variations include white and midnight black.

Berta Rojas: Up Close and Personal with Paraguay's Ambassador of Tourism

Full name: Berta Beatriz Rojas Benítez
Date of birth: September 23, 1966
Country of birth: Paraguay

Who are your favorite writers, composers?
The great composers of all time, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms.but I always felt a call to perform the work of Latin American emerging composers with whose music I fully identify. Edin Solis, Quique Sinesi, and Julio Cesar Oliva, whose works are included in my latest album "Salsa Roja" are clear examples. This album is true to my essence as a Latin American classical guitarist. In it I sought to explore rhythms and sounds of our America from living composers writing their music today and doing so with a beauty that is totally moving for me. Something similar happens to me with literature; I feel strongly attracted to the work of Latin American writers.

ON YOUR WORK OF ART:

When did you decide to become an artist?

When I started my first steps in music, I considered it a hobby, a fun way to share relaxed time with my brothers and friends. Besides, I had a really good ear and an ability to learn.  Being very undisciplined at the time, I didn't glimpse what music would later represent in my life.

Things changed radically when I had the chance to get to know in depth the work of a great artist from my country, someone who despite so many adversities and so much solitude and distance, was able to make his way with effort, tenacity and an iron will. That someone was Agustin Barrios. Discovering his world had a great impact in my life and I can say today it was crucial in making the decision to become an artist.

Museo Orlina Celebrates Grand Opening

All roads led to Tagaytay last Wednesday, April 9, 2014 for the grand opening celebration of Museo Orlina.

The museum is the showcase of the artistry of internationally acclaimed Ramon Orlina, pioneer and foremost practitioner of glass sculpture in the country. Before Orlina, glass was largely appreciated only for its utilitarian function: as drinking vessels, window glass panes or automotive windshields. A visionary, Orlina saw beyond the humble origin of this industrial glass residue. The result is an exultant body of works that, through the decades, have dazzled the art scene and prized by numerous collectors. Triumphantly, Orlina has transformed the medium by elevating it to the dignity and respectability of art.

All the Museum Levels are named after Orlina’s children. One enters LEVEL 1 NAESA his eldest daughter to the Reception Lobby.

Also situated here is the Reflections Gallery. It is a choice space devoted to changing exhibitions, reflecting the vitality and dynamism of contemporary Philippine art. The exciting plurality of various styles, themes and directions is singular proof of the Filipino artists’ genius, renewal and re-invention.

The Reflections Gallery spills onto the LOWER LEVEL that opens up through a doorway to the sculpture garden.

Philippine Art Awards Announces National Winners for 2014

The eight national winners of the 2014 Philippine Art Awards (PAA) have been honored during the awarding ceremony and formal opening of exhibition at the Yuchengco Museum in Makati City.

Bayen Elero, Corporate Affairs Director PMFTC, Inc., said in her message, "As we strengthen our community projects all over the country, we truly take pleasure collaborating with the sectors promoting Philippine culture and the arts."

Dave Gomez, Communications Manager of PMFTC, Inc., thanked the partners of Philippine Art Awards. without whose support, the PAA would have not done its tasked for almost 20 years. He said "through the years, PAA, has maintained its preeminent status particularly due to the consistent support of our national as well as regional partners all over the country, and generally, by the eagerly growing participation of the Filipino visual artists nationwide."

Aside from cash prizes, each of the eight winners received a trophy designed by National Artist Napoleon Abueva and a trip to the forthcoming Basel Art Fair in Hong Kong this May. The winners were to keep their winning entries as well.

Dr. Patrick Flores, a member of the Jury, in his curatorial introduction to the exhibit entitled Quest for Quality showcasing the forty regional finalists from all over the country says, "Philippine Art Awards is currently the only truly national art program of competition and exhibition, pursuing a vision that has adequately invested in both curation and criticism and has patiently and diligently engaged the fraught category of 'nation' and perhaps the afterlife of its oftentimes belabored 'identity'."

Flores further adds, "This gathering of artists who have been conferred the highest honors from the competition through the years testifies to the gains of this sustained endeavor. It reveals the diversity of media and temperament. It scans expression across the archipelago. And it traces the transformation of both talent and tradition, marking the achievements of artists in the intersecting demands of skill, narrative, concept, material, and social response. Their art has become telling moments in the passage of contemporary culture."

Five Juror's Choice of Merit who received P80,000 each are Jan Olympus dela Cruz for his work entitled Sunod Sunuran sa Haring Araw; Karlo Olavides of Taguig City for his work entitled The Key; Rodolfo Torres, Jr. of Bacolor, Pampanga for his work entitled Ang Anak, Ama at Lobo; Roedil Geraldo of Talisay, Negros Occidental for his work entitled Rat Race; and Jonathan Salvatierra of Valenzuela City for his work entitled Bulok.
